6 reasons you need to visit San Marcos La Laguna

Why should you visit San Marcos La Laguna? This is one of my absolute favorite places on earth, so let me tell you why you should add it to your list!

From the stunning landscapes to the vibrant community, San Marcos is really a unique place like no where else I’ve visited.

Maybe you’re already planning a trip to Guatemala and are wondering how much time you should spend here, or maybe you’re seeking the perfect destination for you to disconnect and reconnect with yourself.

Wherever you are in your journey to Guatemala, this post will help you figure out why you should come here and help you start planning your dream San Marcos trip.

Why you should visit San Marcos La Laguna

1. To have a spiritual experience

If you’re considering a visit to San Marcos La Laguna, you might have heard about the intense spiritual power of this town. And it’s undeniable – being around Lake Atitlan is an electric experience.

San Marcos in particular is known for catering to people who are looking to have a spiritual experience and get out of their comfort zone.

From sound baths to breath work to cacao ceremonies, San Marcos is overflowing with beautiful and intentional spiritual experiences.

So whether you’re an experienced practitioner of these modalities or you’re curious to open your mind, San Marcos is the perfect place for you. (You can view a list of all the spiritual experiences you can try out in San Marcos here!)

There’s options for everyone and every type of experience – you can attend a full on yoga retreat for a week, you can stay at Eagle’s Nest for a couple days to dip your toe into what’s available, or you can stay in town and try things out at your own pace.

    2. To disconnect from everything else

San Marcos is the perfect place to disconnect from the world for a bit. Looking for a reset? Tired of being stuck in the city? Just need some space to let your mind rest for a bit?

San Marcos is a great spot to let yourself relax and really be present. You can even treat yourself to a luxury stay around the lake to really turn your brain off.

Many people travel to San Marcos for a week and end up staying for a few months, the lake is just one of those places. So if you’re ready to disconnect, this is the place to do it.

      3. To reconnect to yourself

On the other hand, San Marcos is the perfect place to REconnect with yourself! Each time I travel to San Marcos, I find myself healing parts of me I never expected.

You don’t even have to know what you need “fixed” when you come to San Marcos, because it will reveal itself all on its own. You really always get exactly what you need out of being here, even if it’s something you didn’t expect.

To reconnect with yourself, you can spend some quality solo travel time just enjoying the beauty of the lake. You can stay at Eagle’s Nest and allow all of the experiences at this retreat center to guide you along the way. You can try out different healing modalities.

Whatever you do, you don’t even really need to try to reconnect with yourself – it will just happen. If you want to visit San Marcos La Laguna, be ready for this to be a part of the experience.

        4. To slow down for a while

After fast traveling for too long, I know just how important it is to slow down, and San Marcos is the perfect place to do it. There’s something about being around the lake, in Guatemala, and in the community that really forces you to take a step back.

No one here is in a rush. Things still get done, yet there’s no external pressure of needing to be more or do more. Which is a beautiful thing (and something very hard for many of us westerners).

If you’re a digital nomad craving a moment of rest and slowing down, or if you’re looking for a vacation where you can take it easy (while still having access to activities when you want them) San Marcos might be the spot.

Once you get here, you’ll see just how easy it is to fall into a flow with the rhythm of the town. You’ll be casually strolling along the lake in no time, with no care in the world.

          5. To work

On the other hand, it’s also a great place to buckle down and get some work done as a digital nomad. Honestly, I’ve used this space for both slowing down, relaxing, and being just as much as I’ve used it to take big steps in my business and get down to work.

It’s where I actually really started building this blog! San Marcos is FULL of creative energy. With so many healers, creators, and artists in the town, it’s hard not to feel inspired.

So if you also need some space to work on your business, San Marcos is an amazing place for that. For such a small town, there are some amazing cafes for getting work done that really do get the creative juices flowing.

Even if you just come here for a few days, chances are that you’ll leave feeling inspired and ready to take action on your business when you open up your laptop again.

            6. To be with nature

Lastly, you can come here to simply be with nature. Lake Atitlan is undeniably one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world. The views of the epic lake and volcanoes really never gets old.

So even if spirituality isn’t your thing and you’re not a digital nomad, you can still get SO much out of visiting here (check out this list for even more ideas!)

Take in the views around the lake. Explore the other towns. Visit the nature preserve. Take a hike with a local. Really admire the beauty that surrounds this part of the country.

              Conclusion

I could go on and on about why San Marcos is such an incredible place to visit, but hopefully this gave you a little bit of an idea of why this should be on your bucket list.

No matter if you’re a digital nomad, someone looking for a quick vacation, or in need of a deep spiritual reset, there’s something in San Marcos for everyone.
